Granting of a Royal Charter

Since the 13th Century the UK sovereign has granted Royal Charters, on advice from the Privy Council, to over 900 reputable charities and companies.

This section of the website outlines Royal Charter-specific information and advice, and looks at why your organisation may be interested in applying for Chartered status.

What is a Royal Charter?

Many years ago the only way to publicly incorporate a body was via applying for a Royal Charter.

In modern society, charities and bodies are now incorporated through either Companies House or the Charity Commission.

The granting of a Royal Charter is relatively rare, however bodies can still apply.

Why do professional organisations still apply for Royal Charters?

Chartered status infers increased status and standing from within a particular profession and outside in the wider world.

Chartered bodies can grant Chartered status to members and this provides increased individual professional status. e.g. Chartered Surveyor or Chartered Accountant.
